When Bay Area author Vendela Vida co-founded the literary magazine the Believer in 2003—the same year she published her first novel, "And Now You Can Go," and married the author Dave Eggers—she and her writer friends were already garnering praise, and some disdain, for trying to shake up a literary scene that had faded since its heyday decades earlier.
